When Melody Sterling, a bombshell, nymphomaniac, debutant from Louisiana hires Harvey Lung to investigate the brutal killing and mutilation of her lover on the banks of the Mississippi River, he soon discovers there’s more behind the faceless corpse in the mud and the beautiful face of his client than meets the eye.
This case may not only be the end of Lung’s career, but the end of his life. As the bodies pile up and the minutes count down, he suspects Melody Sterling is more, or less, than she appears.
Rapidly, Lung is thrust into a nightmare journey through the shadowy underbelly of 1940s St. Louis, hearing word of a mysterious crystal skull, a blackmail plot thick with pornography, and deadly narcotics being trafficked on the river. Lung’s snooping spirals down into a blood-slick maze, rife with alcoholic weirdos and freaks, ranging from the tattooed femme fatale, Misty Moon, to the cannibalistic river rats, Dingbat and Ratbone, and the demented psycho killer known simply as… The Bag.
Lung comes to understand he’s perhaps the most deranged of them all. His history of broken bones and broken hearts is slowly unveiled as he peels away the endless layers of the crime in question.
